The A PROVISIONAL layout for Mountain Ash’s new cross valley link project shows where the new road could be built by 2019.

The major project by Rhondda Cynon Taf council promises to improve traffic flow in and around the Cynon Valley town, by linking communities on opposite sides of the river and having a knock-on improvement in the town centre.

New maps, Tweeted by the council leader Andrew Morgan, show draft plans for the major project which are subject to change following a public consultation – which includes two public exhibi- tions in Penrhiwceiber and Mountain Ash. They will take place at Penrhiwceiber Institute on Wednesday, November 16, and at Mountain Ash Day Centre on Friday, November 18, with both events running from noon until 7pm.

The bird’s eye images show how the road – which would link traffic on the A4059 with the B4257 – could be laid out.

A new junction on the A4059 – its layout yet to be agreed – would be created at the current turn off into the Cwm Cynon Industrial Estate.

The industrial estate road would then be extended with a bridge built over the river and railway line, coming out at a new junction on the B4257 Miskin Road, parallel to Glyngwyn Street.

Subject to planning permission and the compulsory purchase of third- party land, construction work is set to start in the 2017-18 financial year, with a planning application being submitted in December.

The council’s analysis indicates the bridge will carry more than 1,700 vehicles in each of the morning and afternoon peak hours in 2030.

Speaking when the public exhibitions were announced in October, Councillor Morgan said: “I would encourage residents to come along and take a look at the plans that will improve journey times and reduce congestion in the area.”
