THE College Merthyr Tydfil is continuing to go from strength to strength. In 2016, it achieved its highest success rates ever with pass rates at A-level exceeding 99% and many vocational subject areas achieving 100% success rates.
The college’s reputation for high-quality learning and teaching, pastoral care and excellent outcomes has resulted in marked increases in recruitment across all areas.
This coupled with the fact that the college has one of the strongest financial performances in Wales, has enabled it to overcome reductions in funding while increasing quality and investing in learners’ futures.
The college is very proud of the fact that it has succeeded in transforming the learning experience and environment for all students, providing real hope and excitement for the future.
Over the last few years, students from across the college have had the opportunity to participate in a wide range of academic and enrichment activities to enhance their studies and provide them with the skills required to progress onto higher education or employment. Not only have students been able to participate in a wide range of enrichment activities such as sports, debating society, English writing group, history and politics society, Institute of Leadership and Management Programme, Seren Hub; but they have also had the added opportunity to engage in a much broader range of academic, entrepreneurial and community projects.
In 2016 the college also introduced a number of additional initiatives to support its more-able-and-talented learners. These include the “brilliant” club and a new Extended Project Qualification.
Over the last three years the college has had increasing numbers of learners enrolling to study. Many of these have gone on to study at leading universities across the UK, including Casey Chinnock. Casey joined the college from Rhymney High School in 2014 and has successfully progressed on to study management BSc at Bath University.
