THIS year’s Poppy Appeal in a Cynon Valley town has raised an “overwhelming” £14,700 during November and that figure is still rising.

The Royal British Legion Aberdare branch has thanked the generosity of local people who have given to the cause over the past few weeks, with £6,300 raised in the local Tesco supermarket alone.

The annual Remembrance Sunday parade through Aberdare town centre was followed by a service at the Victoria Square war memorial as the town centre came to a standstill to remember those who had given the ultimate sacrifice at war.

The 2016 total surpasses that of 2015, when £11,000 was raised.

A statement from the local branch said: “We are slowly making our way to the last of the collection tins and are overwhelmed by our current total.

“We set ourselves a target that we were hoping to achieve by September 2017, this being £15,000.

“We are pleased to say that, with the outstanding generosity of the people of Aberdare and the hardworking volunteers and not forgetting the businesses that had collection tins, we have raised an estimated £14,700 to date. This includes over £6,300 raised in Tesco alone.”

The Aberdare branch said the total is still rising, and will be bolstered further by a planned collection in the town centre this Saturday as part of a Christmas event.

The statement added: “Money is still coming in, so we expect this total to grow over the next few weeks.

“Our volunteers will also be out this Saturday in the town centre, continuing our collection on behalf of the appeal, please come along and enjoy the Christmas event that has been organised.

“We thank you for your continued generosity and will give a further update in the coming weeks.”
