A CYNON Valley man will take part in a fundraising walk along the Great Wall of China to raise money for a local children’s charity.

Daniel Allen, who lives in Mountain Ash, has been selected to take part in the Ty Hafan China Trek, which will see him depart for Asia on Thursday, April 29, and return nine days later on Sunday, May 7.

The 64-year-old is a former armourer at Maindy Barracks, and he is no stranger to taking part in a charity event, having volunteered for numer- ous local causes. Daniel, who is originally from Penrhiwceiber, said: “I’m a volunteer with Ty Hafan, and wanted to raise more money for the cause.

“It was decided that two people would go to China for the trek, and I’ve been picked as one of those along with another volunteer who is from Swansea.

“I’ve also been a marshal at Ty Hafan’s Rainbow Run, and on the cycle route for the charity’s Brecon to Cardiff event, while I also volunteer for the British Legion among other things, including the Welsh Blood Service.”

And, keen walker Daniel says he’s not worried about the physical nature of the trek across one of the new seven wonders of the world – which will see him hike over watch towers and mountains, and through historic battlement stations during five days on the move. He added: “I don’t think it will be too challenging for me – I love walking! I’ve also never been to China before.

“It’ll come round soon enough and I’m really looking forward to it now.”

Daniel is looking for donations and sponsors for his trip, and you can donate to the cause by visiting www.justgiving. com/fundraising/DanielAllen12.
