THE new 3G sports pitch in Mountain Ash is now being enjoyed by local teams – and it is hoped that full-contact rugby matches will be hosted there soon.

The all-weather facility at Caedrawnant – a stone’s throw from Mountain Ash RFC – has recently been finished, with the old artificial pitch being upgraded.

Rhondda Cynon Taf council says that while football and hockey teams are already enjoying the pitch, as well as rugby clubs for training, the new 3G could soon get the green light to host fullcontact rugby.

Welsh Rugby Union officials are due on site soon to give it the all-clear.

The council says a wide range of sports clubs called for the upgrades, having raised the problem of wet or freezing weather over the winter – which causes matches to be postponed and local leagues’ fixture schedules congested.

Ann Crimmings, RCT council’s cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture, said: “Caedrawnant is the latest in a series of 3G pitches to be completed and the feedback we have had from clubs now using the new facilities is that they make a massive difference, in terms of the reliability of bookings and fixtures, as well as the numbers of players and teams they can accommodate.

“I have no doubt such positive feedback will also be received from teams and clubs using the nowcomplete Caedrawnant facility.

“There is a strong and healthy tradition of team sports in RCT and there is a huge network of clubs, coaches and volunteers working across the county borough, with people of all ages and abilities, to develop interest – and skills – in team sports such as football and rugby.”

Funded by the council’s RCTinvest scheme, the Caedrawnant playing fields have also benefited from new tennis courts and a new children’s playground.
