POLICE have launched a crackdown on the Fernhill housing estate following concerns about rising crime, anti-social behaviour and even drug dealing. Officers say offenders have received a ‘clear message’.

POLICE have launched a crackdown on a Cynon Valley housing estate following concerns about rising crime in the area, anti-social behaviour and drug dealing.

Officers say “criminals have received a clear message” throughout its crackdown, with the aim of making residents feel safer.

South Wales Police says its recent work to tackle issues on the Fernhill estate started last summer, following concerns from local residents that anti-social behaviour and crime was increasing in their area.

A meeting with the council, housing provider Trivallis, the fire service and the police’s anti-so- cial behaviour team was set up to try and address those concerns.

Since then, South Wales Police launched Operation Violet Cobra to address drug dealing – and said a number of arrests have been made and significant amount of drugs recovered from the area.

Deputy local police inspector (DPI) Jo Jones said the measures in Fernhill have seen “months of positive action”.

DPI Jones said: “During the meeting there was a real willingness from all partners to address the concerns of residents.

“Each agency attending took away actions which were carried out having a significant immediate impact on the community.

“After months of positive action we are hoping residents are feeling safer on the estate and criminals have received a clear message that they will be targeted and caught.

“This work will continue and we would urge any residents with any concerns to let us know so we can all work together to address them.”

Police say that, as part of the crackdown, Trivallis has worked with them to take action against breaches of tenancy, while residents’ meetings were also carried out along with meetings with the fire service to offer advice to tenants.
