BRYNITHEL ................... 8 ROGERSTONE ............... 3

BRYNITHEL recorded back-to-back victories for the first time this season following a fantastic defensive effort to defeat Rogerstone 8-3 in a game that produced no less than seven yellow cards.

Such was the magnitude of the last play it lasted no fewer than seven minutes with the hosts penned in their own five-metre line defending scrum after scrum with three forwards eventually in the sin-bin. Carwyn Perry was already off the pitch for a dangerous tackle and both Shaun Pitt and Matthew Bradley seeing yellow as the clock ticked down, with hooker Scott Pitt returning to the fray during the tense finale.

Match referee Ryan Lewis set out his stall within the first 10 minutes as Brynithel captain Justin Breakwell was first to see yellow after a deliberate knock-on with the visitors camped on the five metre line, the visiting outside half kicking the resultant penalty to open the scoring.

Ieaun James was making his debut on the wing for the Owls and the rookie three-quarter denied a certain try, ankle tapping a visiting attacker as he raced towards the tryline.

With the match ebbing and flowing from side to side a Rhys James penalty went agonisingly wide for Brynithel as they looked to get on the scoreboard.

The Rogerstone No 8 was next to receive 10 minutes from the official, shortly followed by his team mate on the wing.

With a two-man advantage the hosts took the game to their opponents and were eventually rewarded as Adrian Watkins calmly slotted over a penalty from in front of the posts to send the sides in level at the interval.

With their tails up the home side took the game to Rogerstone from the off and were eventually rewarded as No 8 Will Carter crashed over to put his side in front for the first time in the contest, the resultant conversion missed.

The Newport outfit tried in vain to break through the home defence but to no avail, though with the temperature dropping on an already cold day handling errors were a contributory factor to a lack of any swift movement across the backline.

Brynithel’s victory will long be remembered for the gargantuan forward effort during the dramatic last play and the tally of yellow cards in a game that saw no quarter given.
