TONYREFAIL .............. 41 CAERAU ELY ............... 12

WITH Ton struggling to find some consistency this season their supporters could have been forgiven for expecting an indifferent performance this week after the win in the last game against Tylorstown but their team put in a huge first 30 minutes which laid the foundation for the bonus-point win.

With the forwards having the edge over the visitors larger pack in most phases, they retained possession for long periods, scoring two converted tries and a penalty in the process to go 17-0 up. The only downside was that with a little more accuracy and composure they could have scored two more tries. Never the less they prevented Caerau scoring until . the dying minutes of the first half and with Ton having the advantage of the slope in the second half things were looking good with the score at 17-5.

In the second half Ton were soon back on the scoreboard with a penalty and this was followed 10 minutes later with a penalty try from a five metre scrum as they drove Caerau back.

The visitors responded with their best period in the game as they used their forwards to drive the ball up the field. They got close to Ton’s tryline and kept the pressure on for a period but the home side defence was more than a match for them before they took play upfield to Caerau’s line. A five metre scrum gave Ton the opportunity to go for the drive again but Caerau disrupted it initially but were unable to stop Ton’s No 8 from picking up and driving over for the try.

With 80 minutes on the clock the score was 34-5 but the game still went on and with tired legs on both sides Caerau got their second try and converted it before Ton hit back straight from the restart with another converted try to make the final score 41-12.

This was a big team performance from Ton and their defensive performance right across the park was second to none. Man of the match for them was No 8 Chris Driscoll who made yards from the base of the scrum or put others in space to do so and on one occasion chased down a Caerau centre who had intercepted a pass and had a clear run to the line before he was hauled down.
