A BRAND new 3G allweather pitch will soon be built close to Abercynon Sports Centre.

The announcement comes as Rhondda Cynon Taf council announces three outdoor pitches will be installed across the county borough during the 2017/18 year.

The others will be at Ferndale Comprehensive School, along with plans to upgrade the existing astroturf at the Garth Olwg Lifelong Learning Centre into a 3G pitch.

The local authority also said there is potential to create an indoor 3G facility at Rhondda Fach Sports Centre.

Councillor Ann Crimmings, cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture, said: “The new 3G outdoor pitches planned for Abercynon, Garth Olwg and Ferndale – as well as the plans currently being developed for an indoor facility in Rhondda Fach – show that we are committed to providing modern leisure facilities for our residents.

“When I met with sports clubs from across the county borough last year, there was a recurring theme that bad weather was having a huge impact on their training and fixtures, with postponements during the winter months affecting their fixture schedules.”

Last year, the council funded new 3G pitches in Pentre, Mountain Ash and Graig, and partfunded a new 3G pitch at Sardis Road in Pontypridd, while all-weather sports pitches are also part of the new 21st Century Schools projects in Tonyrefail and Tonypandy.

Coun Crimmings added: “These pitches are already making a huge difference to local sports players and their clubs, which is why we said we would deliver more of them to our communities in 2017/18 as part of the latest capital programme.”
