DIVISION 3 EAST CENTRAL B
TYLORSTOWN ............ 24 COWBRIDGE ............... 24
WITH 15 minutes to go and 24-9 up, Tylorstown were looking towards a fourth try which would have secured a bonus point win.
Inexplicably, Tylorstown threw away this game with poor game management in the final quarter to gift Cowbridge a share in the points.
Tylorstown completely dominated this game, with the pack in total charge of proceedings until the final quarter when a raft of replacements entered the fray and Cowbridge crept up behind them with excellent kicking from the full back to redress the scores.
In poor conditions, the Cowbridge full back, Robert Oliver, and his Tylorstown counterpart, Morgan John, kicked well at the posts throughout the game. Oliver’s precise boot kept the away side in the game as the referee penalised Tylorstown relentlessly for transgressions in the contact area. Oliver put Cowbridge into the lead within 10 minutes, totally against the run of play.
Both sides tackled well and it was a pleasing spectacle in spite of the heavy conditions under foot. Home scrum half Kieran Richards dictated play behind his controlling pack and was rewarded for his efforts with a fine try after prop Ashley Thomas and captain Chris Lloyd made charges towards the line. Wing Morgan John kicked the conversion which added to his earlier penalty.
Going into the interval only seven points up, was little reward for the dominance the pack exerted over the visitors and ultimately cost Tylorstown the game.
Tylorstown pulled away from Cowbridge quite early on in the second period, with young No 8 Nathan Davies taking advantage of Tylorstown’s superiority by scoring a brace of tries. His first was as a result of the Tylorstown pack trundling up the field and pulling in defenders.
His second came from the scrum where he picked up at the back of the scrum and forced his way over for a powerful try. Both scores converted by the trusty boot of John.
With Oliver pegging back the scores and Cowbridge scoring a very controversial try in the corner, Cowbridge left Penrhys Park with a draw and Tylorstown left the field puzzled at how they threw away this game.
