Roadworks under way to improve junction
WORK to improve a busy junction and pedestrian crossing in Aberdare began on Tuesday.
It is taking place at the junction of B4275 Gadlys Road, Glan Road and Hirwaun Road, and is costing Rhondda Cynon Taf council £45,000.
The work at Gadlys, close to the entrance of Aberdare Park, will see the installation of Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation (MOVA) technology to the traffic lights, which will manage the signal timings in response to developing queues.
Pedestrian detectors at the junction will also be replaced and upgraded, seeing the pedestrian crossing phases of the lights sequence run more efficiently.
Road markings at the junction will also be refurbished as part of the work, which is funded by the council’s Making Better Use Programme.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “The Making Better Use Programme is identifying low-cost improvements to the county borough’s highways, which will make a big difference to road-users.
“The work in Gadlys will improve the junction on this busy road, which is an important route for traffic travelling between Aberdare, Cwmdare, Trecynon and Hirwaun.
“All works that will affect traffic flow will take place outside of peak hours to minimise disruption.”
Contractors will start the works on March 14, and they will last for around three weeks.
Temporary traffic management will be deployed on the road as part of the project, and any work that restricts the flow of traffic will be outside of peak hours to minimise disruption.
Coun Morgan added: “Drivers are already benefiting from the Programme’s 2016/17 investment, when the council set aside £1m for local schemes – such as introducing dedicated left turn lanes at the Ynys and Asda roundabouts on the A4059, carried out last year, and works to provide right turn lanes in Mountain Ash, carried out this year, to improve traffic flow in the Cynon Valley.”
