CYNON Valley band Chroma are celebrating after picking up the Best Breakthrough Act award at the Cardiff Music Awards.

The rising stars – Liam Bevan, Katie Hall and Zac Mather – are renowned for their fierce live performances and said they were overjoyed to pick up their award.

“We were over the moon, it never came to us that we would win the award due to the other bands that were shortlisted being so good and having such a great following, so it came as a bit of a shock but also felt so rewarding,” said drummer Zac.

“The award for us now just makes us want to drive on further, reach new heights and see how far we can push this band and ourselves as musicians.”

The Cardiff Music Awards were originally staged as an online awards, but this year were held in a venue – the Tramshed in the Welsh capital.

Chroma were among a number of bands who played a live set on the evening.

“Being able to perform was great,” said Zac.

“I think there were quite a few people there that hadn’t seen us before so it was a good opportunity to play to a crowd that might not have come to see us before.

“We’ve been very lucky in March to play a few big stages, we played Sin City in Swansea, upstairs Clwb Ifor Bach and Tramshed all in the space of a few weeks which was mad.”

Unsurprisingly the band had a great night out at the awards.

“The Cardiff Music Awards was a fine evening,” added the sticksman.

“The atmosphere was amazing.

“What we thought was great that we didn’t think we would see that many friends in the same room.

“There were plenty of our friends that we haven’t seen for a long time or don’t get to see regularly which was nice.

“We celebrated – maybe too hard – with all the booze that The CMA’s kindly donated.

“Afterwards we went out and enjoyed our evening in our favourite place in the world, Clwb Ifor Bach.”

As for the future there is plenty on the horizon.

“We want to carry on making music that we love making and playing live,” said Zac.

“We’re playing Maes B at the National Eisteddfod this summer and a few pop-up shows at the Eisteddfod too which is going to be great fun.

“We’ve got a number of shows lined up over the summer.”
