MERTHYR VETERANS . 0 NELSON ......................... 0

MERTHYR hosted a much-improved Nelson side in The Wales Veterans Over-45s League but they were hit by injuries and work commitments.

Merthyr could raise only 11 players and 10 of them were over 50.

The first half was hardfought but devoid of goalmouth action. Nelson had most of the pressure but were forced to shoot from distance.

The closest to a goal came when for Merthyr Sullivan’s whipped in free-kick from the left found Otway whose superbly timed header went inches over the bar.

The second half started at a faster pace and Nelson went close when Tim Martin shot across the face of the goal. A fine move down the left between Otway and Sullivan led to Williams’ cross to the far post well defended by Nelson.

Ryan Flood then threatened with a fine dribble into the heart of the Merthyr defence. The game had now opened up and Merthyr created clear chances. Twice Hatch broke through down the right only to be foiled by the Nelson keeper.

Nelson hit back with their first real chance and forced goalkeeper Collins into a fine save.

Merthyr continued to search for a winner and Cleaver went close when he headed just wide from a corner on the right. With time running out, Otway sent a square pass to Lewis on the edge of the area but the effort went just wide.

Merthyr played well as a team but were unable to use any substitutes and in very warm conditions. The defence was solid with outstanding contributions from captain Chris Cleaver and Paul Jones.
