Terrible trio living the high life in ‘80s Essex
WHITE GOLD BBC Two, Wednesday, 10pm
WHITE Gold is a six-part comedy series written and directed by Damon Beesley.
Set in a double-glazing showroom in 1980s Essex, it’s a story of dodgy shenanigans, scams and petty rivalries – alongside free-flowing drugs, cash and sex – combining raucous knockabout humour with a powerful and emotionally engaging undertow.
Essex, 1983. As writer Damon Beesley puts it, “a time before the invention of ‘Essex girls’ jokes, fake tan or TOWIE. A time when having doubleglazed patio doors installed meant you were winning at life.”
Meet double-glazing salesman extraordinaire Vincent Swan (Ed Westwick). Smart, handsome, charismatic and cocksure, Vincent will stop at nothing to get a sale.
His team at Cachet Windows include Fitzpatrick (James Buckley), a smarmy reprobate who can charm the life savings out of anyone, and Lavender (Joe Thomas), a failed musician whose crippling politeness and moral backbone have a habit of getting in the way of a sale.
Vincent and Lavender take a bet on whether Fitzpatrick can pull off the ultimate salesman’s con – selling brand-new windows to a customer he’s recently sold the exact same product to.
Meanwhile, Vincent’s attempt to convince an old colleague to join the double glazing business takes an unexpected turn.
Lead actor Ed Westwick says: “I am very excited to be stepping into the world of White Gold. It’s brilliantly crafted and very unique – a special piece.”
