A RUGBY club is aiming to break the world record for the largest gathering of Peter Pans.

Kenfig Hill RFC needs 290 tights-clad characters if it’s to break the current record, which was set at 289 in Florida, US, in October 2015.

It’ll be the second attempt for the club, in Kenfig Hill, near Bridgend, which only fell short by 19 people last year.

It’s all part of a community fun day which will also feature bouncy castles, a water slide, ball pit, face painting, a barbecue, cricket, football, live music and Peter Pan-themed activities to raise money for the Emyr Owen branch of children’s cancer charity Latch.

There is also camping available for the night, which includes campfire songs and a chance to toast some marshmallows around the fire.

Emyr had been an avid member of the club’s under 11s squad when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.

He lost his battle in August 2009 aged 12.

Organiser Chris Tossell said the attempt at the Peter Pan world record was fitting as Emyr will never grow old, just like the famous character.

He said: “We set up the community fun day last year, where we were unlucky in the attempt of beating this world record, only falling short by 19 people.

“With the success of the first year, we are expecting bigger support this year and we are confident in breaking this record on the second attempt.

“The community day was set up to enable families to get together to have a fun-packed day and it also benefits the surrounding local community of Cefn Cribwr, Pyle and Cornelly.

“As part of the day we wanted to have a theme which fitted in with the world record attempt.

“The first year saw us raise £750.”

He added: “For us to put Kenfig Hill on the map and beat this current record we need all attendees to come along dressed as Peter Pan, this can include babies right through to adults.

“For the record to stand, we ask that all participants must be dressed in a full Peter Pan costume, which consists of a green tunic; brown or green leggings or tights; a brown belt; pointed green hat and a sword.”

Entrance to the fun day on Saturday, July 15, costs £4 or £10 for a family of four, payable on the day.

For those who want to camp overnight a £5 supplement will be charged.
