USW SPORTS AWARDS WINNERS REVEALED
student and rugby coach from the Rhondda has been recognised for his work with Llanharan Rugby Club at an annual awards ceremony.
Lloyd Evans, 21, from Penygraig, is in his final year of a Sport Studies degree at the University of South Wales (USW).
He was presented with the Professional Practice Award at the USW Sport Recognition Awards, held at the Principality Stadium earlier this month.
The award recognises Lloyd’s success as a volunteer coach with Llanharan RFC, helping set up a new project to develop better links between the club and local schools.
He worked with a range of organisations, including the WRU and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, to create a timetable for the school year, and soon has Y Pant Comprehensive School on board.
The project grew to include primary schools, such as Llanharan, Brynna and Llanhari, where Lloyd was part of a team delivering after-school and curriculum time sessions.
He said: “The schools project has been a great way to introduce rugby to the pupils; getting the children into the game and, most importantly, having fun while keeping active.
“My mentors – Scott Woodford from Sport RCT and Alan Jenkins at Llanharan RFC – have really helped me along the way with developing my management and coaching skills. I’ve also been able to gain qualifications in working with young people, which will no doubt help with my future career.”
Lloyd has also managed six student coaches, organised inter-school festivals and is hoping to recruit more volunteer coaches to help expand the project across the community.
He added: “I was very surprised to have won the Professional Practice award as the calibre was so high.
“To be recognised by the university, who do a great job with placements, work experience and employability, was phenomenal. It was a really special night.”
