East Wales take the spoils in first of two-match Origin Series against West

Dan Davies added two further tries for the East with Mike Hurley converting for the first and Brad Williams the second to make it 20-0.

Three more tries in the last 10 minutes of the half brought the interval score to 32-6.

Duane Iles and Ryan Shallish both scored for East with Williams converting both before Gareth Howells brought the first cheers of the half for West with a try that Aaron Lewis converted.

The sides swapped tries early on in the second half. Scott Britton crossed for the East with the kick by Williams, cancelled out by a Karlin Claridge score for the West, converted by Lewis.

East then started to dominate again. Dean Higgs scored an unconverte­d try for East before Morgan Knight got on the scoresheet with Williams adding the extras.

A brace for Dan Davies, both converted by Williams brought the score up to 60-12 before Nathan Hawkins crossed from close range for West with Lewis again on target with the conversion.

Finally, Brandon Williams crossed to put the icing on the East cake with the kick by Brad Williams completing the scoring.

THE day started with two junior games between the regions with West proving to be best at both under-15 and under-17 levels.

In the under-15 encounter, West led 8-0 early on after tries from Brandon Lewis and Ewan Badham, both kicks going wide, then on 24 minutes, a Logan Phillips try converted by Joseph Hawkins made it 14-0.

East hit back with an unconverte­d Cameron Samuel try making the score 14-4 at half-time but there was only one team in it after the break.

Two quick-fire tries from Ewan Badham and Joseph Hawkins with a kick by Hawkins brought the score to 24-4, and in the last few minutes, Ieuan Badham and Iestyn Hopkins both crossed with Hawkins adding a kick.

EAST WALES U17 ....... 30 WEST WALES U17 ....... 44

FIVE tries for West Wales under-17s’ Sean Collins ensured that they won a hard fought encounter in the closest game of the day.

The visitors quickly led 12-0 after tries from James Smith and Sean Collins, both converted by Ben Hunter.

Two quick tries for East Wales by Karlin Claridge and Owain Harvey, both converted by Jac Powell, brought the scores level.

Then two West tries, from Jordan Ball and Sean Collins, one converted by Hunter, made the score 22-12 before Joel Davies’ try for East, converted by Claridge made it 22-18 to West at the break.

First try of second half went to Claridge, an impressive player who was recently man of the match in his first team debut at Cardiff Blue Dragons. He added the extras to give East a 24-22 lead.

After that, it was West’s game as they scored four more tries. Collins’ hattrick try then one from Ieuan Ace after he made a clean break by Ieuan Ace, brought the score up to 34-24 as Hunter had converted both.

The on-fire Collins then crossed for two further tries, the first converted by Hunter, the second, a magnificen­t 80-metre run, going unconverte­d.

A Kane Harriet try for East, converted by Claridge, was just a last-minute consolatio­n.
