NEIGHBOURS of a 44-year-old woman whose death is being treated as suspicious have spoken of their shock.

Police investigating the death in Penrhiwceiber, near Mountain Ash, have named the woman as Anna Jura.

A 72-year-old man has been released on police bail after being arrested in connection with her death.

One neighbour on Rheola Street said she thought Anna had lived at the address since before Christmas and had no friends or family in the area.

The 35-year-old said: “If we did know her the place would be swarming with flowers, it’s heartbreaking.”

Another neighbour said the death has left a “strange atmosphere” in the Cynon Valley village.

“It’s been so mysterious, that’s the saddest thing about it,” said the 38-year-old who did not want to be named.

“I’ve been here three years and never saw her. No-one knew her.

“It breaks my heart that it happened opposite me.

“It’s just shocking because it’s relatively quiet around here, usually it feels quite safe.”

Police say Anna died on Thursday, 22 June, and officers remained guarding the property until Sunday.

More than 20 bags were taken from the house, neighbours said, including two computers and a laptop.

Another neighbour said she had never seen Anna despite living opposite.

“I’ve lived here nearly 11 years and I’ve never seen her, I’ve only seen [the man],” said the mother of one.

“I feel really worried, what’s going to happen next? Are our children safe on the street?”

Detective Inspector Dean Llewellyn, of South Wales Police, said: “We appreciate that Anna’s death may have shocked this small and close-knit community and we ask anyone who may have information to please contact us via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence number 1700239971.
