Dad’s tough test in tribute to baby Patti
A DAD has run the first of five half marathons in memory of his stillborn child who died at 35 weeks which he and his wife initially thought was a boy – but have recently found out it was a girl.
Daniel Brewin, 37, from Cilfynydd, decided to take up the challenge in honour of his child who was born on January 13 after 35 weeks and three days of pregnancy.
Daniel and his wife Laura, 36, believed their baby was a boy and named him Patrick. But following recent results from a postmortem examination, the couple were told their child was actually a girl and have named her Patti Elizabeth Brewin.
Daniel said: “We had a gender scan when we were pregnant, and we were told we were having a boy and then we had all the regular scans at the hospital so we were under the impression we were having a boy.
“When our baby was born they wrapped her up quickly and gave her to us to spend some time with.
“We named her Patrick and then a little while later we spoke to the midwife and they came in and said there were some defects that meant they could not tell if it was a boy or a girl.”
After continuing to call their baby Patrick, the couple decided to have the post-mortem examination.
Daniel added: “It was a tough decision to make. We were going to have it to get some answers.
“In the meeting where they discussed the results with us they confirmed that she was a little girl.
“Which, even though we knew it was a possibility, the whole meeting was difficult. Nothing will change our love for our baby.”
All of the money raised by Daniel will go to the stillbirth and neonatal death charity Sands which Daniel described as an “invaluable” support.
Daniel said: “My initial target was £500 and we have reached more than £3,000.”
Last Sunday Daniel took part in his first half marathon and beat his personal best. His challenge will finish on October 10 with the Cardiff Half Marathon.
