‘Our first-ever gig was to see Robbie Williams’

HIS fans are of all ages but two pensioners admit they were probably the oldest people at Robbie Williams’ Cardiff concert on Wednesday night for their very first gig.

Val Harris, 79, and husband Fenton, 85, only went to the gig at the Principality because their son, also called Fenton, had bought tickets but wasn’t able to make it.

Not only are the pensioners proud they were the oldest people there, they can now boast they have been to their first ever gig.

Their son told his parents on Val’s birthday on Monday that he couldn’t get to the gig and so had two spare tickets – and, to – his surprise, Val said they’d snap them up.

She said: “My son had tickets unexpectedly and I said I’ll have them.

“He thought I was joking, but I’ve always liked Robbie Williams and my husband enjoys him on the television.”

Daughter Debbie Jones, 56, from Llanharry, said she was in shock when she heard her parents were off to the former Take That performer’s gig.

She said: “Mum said she would have love to have gone and I thought she was joking. I thought they must be mad. “My father is not good at walking so we tried to discourage them. But they proved us all wrong.” Debbie, who went to the gig with her daughter, said she was more concerned about how they were going to make the trip from Beddau, so she booked them onto a bus from the local rugby club where Fenton is a member. Luckily their seats were on the ground level. Debbie said: “They said they like Robbie because they’ve seen him on telly. It’s the first gig they’ve ever been to.”

After getting home after midnight, Val said they certainly enjoyed their first show.

She said: “It was fabulous. I didn’t think my husband would come but we went and he really enjoyed it.

“He [Robbie] was a great entertainer and included all the fans.

“I think we were the oldest there – my husband certainly would be.”

But it seems Debbie wasn’t the only one baffled by the pair staying out late to the gig – as Val and Fenton were asked by police where they were going after they left the show.

Debbie joked: “It’s so out of character.”
