FILTHY STATE OF OUR CANAL

- TOM HOUGHTON tom.houghton@walesonline.co.uk

A WELSH beauty spot is now “filthy, overgrown” and covered in litter and signs of drug use, it has been claimed.

Disgust has been expressed at the “neglect” that has left the Aberdare canal left looking in a sorry state along its “entire stretch”.

These pictures were taken on Thursday by Chris Dunn and posted to social media, and he said the site “urgently needed litter picking”. He described the scene as “horrible” and said it was “very disappointing”.

He added: “I was disgusted with the state of the entire stretch of the canal.

“The litter and signs of drug taking under the bridge near to the Cwmbach end shocked me. The neglect is also obvious by the council.

“The canal itself is filthy and had litter floating about on top.

“The canal sides are overgrown, it looks like it hasn’t been taken care of for a while.”

Chris, who is from Robertstown, added: “It’s definitely dangerous for children, with the drug taking paraphernalia discarded there.

“I’m no expert but I highly doubt the current conditions are ideal to attract and harbour any forms of wildlife.

“I can recall often seeing ducks and kingfishers on the canal but on this occasion I saw none of the above which are the kinds of wildlife such places hope to attract as it enhances the walkways beauty and footfall to the area.”

He said he would like to see it maintained and better cared for, adding: “We can’t keep blaming cut backs for neglect and misuse.

“The local communities and the council have duties to look after such areas.

“We need to report neglect at the earliest opportunity to the council and misuse/anti social behaviour to the police.”

Rhondda Cynon Taf council was contacted for comment.
