A GROUP of Cynon Valley schoolchildren and their families have raised more than £1,000 with two sponsored walks.

Children from Cynon Valley PALS group and their family and friends took on two big walks around the Dare Valley Country Park in Aberdare.

They took on the two challenges in June in a bid to raise money for their summer playscheme, walking around the park’s lake, and raised a huge total of £1,129.

Playscheme co-ordinator Jessica Clark said: “This charity is amazing. It offers workshop, respite and support for disabled children and their whole family in our local community.”

Speaking about one of the fundraising days, when they were faced with some hostile weather conditions, she added: “The rainy weather could not dampen the spirits of those taking part and the children enjoyed taking part in the walk.

“All children were rewarded with a goody bag, certificate and trophy which they were very pleased with.”

The group runs playschemes for children with disabilities through the Easter and summer holidays.

As well as providing respite for parents, the scheme also encourages children to develop and try new activities with friends and the volunteers.

Ms Clark added: “The charity would also like to thank Penrhiwceibr Co-op who generously donated water for the sponsored walks and who held a raffle to raise some much-needed funds for them.

“The total raised so far stands at £1,129.84. There is still time to donate through PayPal or our BT MyDonate page.

“Huge thanks to everyone who took part and we are looking forward to an exciting summer playscheme.”

It’s not the only recent impressive fundraising effort from the PALS.

In May, the PALS’ Chelsea Edwards, mum to son Thiago, braved a cold, wet and windy Pen y Fan to raise more than £400 as a thank you to the group.

Ms Edwards added: “This group means so much to me and is so close to my heart.”
