Safety fears over trolleys
SHOPPING trolleys are being dumped dangerously close to a busy road and railway line, it is claimed.
A resident claims the trolleys, allegedly from Aberdare Tesco, could cause a “fatal” accident.
SUPERMARKET shopping trolleys are being dumped “dangerously close” to a busy Valleys Aroad and railway line and could cause a “fatal” accident, it is claimed.
The trolleys, which are allegedly being taken from Tesco in Robertstown, Aberdare, have been spotted close to the busy A4059 and railway line running through the Cynon Valley.
Chris Dunn, who lives nearby, said the trolleys are being taken from the store and across the bridge to Robertstown, before being tipped over the side.
He posted these photos to Twitter last week, complaining to the supermarket giant about the dangers they could cause.
Mr Dunn, who has been “at loggerheads” with Tesco for years over the issue, also said other trollies are being dumped in the Afon Cynon.
He said: “Fourteen years I’ve been living in the local area, and for 14 years I have seen Tesco trolleys littering the area, and it’s getting worse.
“I dread to think what would happen if one landed on the road or landed on a car using that road. It could lead to a fatal collision.”
He said he thought it could be because the supermarket has staff-led trolley collections with no coin mechanisms to keep them together.
He added: “I am hoping Tesco will install coin mechanisms on all their trolleys to try and avoid these situations.
“They are not being proactive, they know their trolleys are being taken off site and are littering the river and local public footpaths but they just state they are carrying out regular staff led trolley collections.
“But these staff-led trolley collections do not mean they are wading into the Afon Cynon or clambering into the thick bushes and vegetation which borders the tramway footpath leading to their store.”
He said he has seen several new trolleys dotted around the Robertstown area in the past few weeks, adding: “I feel totally, totally disappointed and frustrated with Tesco’s complete lack of action on this issue.”
A Tesco spokesman said: “We have arranged for the abandoned trolleys to be collected and returned to our Aberdare store.”
