AN intensive care unit in Pontyclun has received cash backing after it was recognised for its good work in the community.

Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit has been commended as a Community Champion by Persimmon Homes East Wales, being awarded £1,000.

The unit received the funding from the housebuilder’s charity initiative Community Champions, with the charity planning to buy two electronic communicators for patients who are ventilated and unable to speak.

Donna Reid, from Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, said: “We are raising money to ensure that patients can live as normal a life as possible and we’re so glad to benefit from this funding.

“We provide support meetings with our patients and offer them psychological support and rehabilitation.

“Persimmon’s donation means a lot to us – it means we can purchase two new electronic communicators and also look to invest in a table-top bike to prevent muscle mass loss in patients.”

Martin Smith, managing director at Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: “Supporting charities in the communities in which we build is so important to us.

“Having read the application from Royal Glamorgan Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit we could really see where the money is going – we’re thrilled to support such a worthy cause which will help many patients.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”
