A CYNON Valley man has been promoted to the highest rank in Welsh junior rugby.

Brian Hopkins, a retired deputy headteacher from Aberdare, has recently been appointed president of the Welsh Rugby Union Junior Group.

Friend Tony Jones explained: “Brian has been working for the Cynon Valley Schools Rugby Union for the past 47 years, 40 of these as chairman.”

Brian, who used to work at Penywaun Primary School, was chairman of the union in 1996 and chairman of the school’s council in 2004.

Mr Jones added: “Brian sees his election to president as a tremendous honour for himself and for the Cynon Valley.

“It’s a very notable achievement in the promotion of schoolboy and girl rugby in Wales and the life of players trying to achieve their greatest goal of playing international rugby for Wales.”

Despite the success, the local union now needs the help of the public.

Mr Jones added: “This year we won two national competitions at Under 11 and Under 15 levels and produced two schoolboy internationals, but we need more support.

“I would like to appeal to any schoolteacher in the valley, male or female, who would like to help us to maintain the excellent work being done to provide rugby at a higher level in schools to contact me.

“We would love you to get involved.”
