TRIBUTES have been paid to a devoted family man and life-long supporter of Mountain Ash RFC, Billy Dowding, after his death at the age of 76.

A DEVOTED family man and life-long supporter of Mountain Ash RFC has been celebrated for his passion for rugby.

Known in the Cynon town for his charm and “booming voice”, fatherof-two William Dowding has been commemorated following his funeral on September 8 at the age of 76.

Born and raised in Mountain Ash, William, known by family and friends as Billy, played in the town’s rugby team as a youth before breaking his arm in an accident.

However, determined not to let injury get in his way, Billy continued to be a loyal supporter of the club throughout his life, attending matches home and away for both the senior and junior teams.

Proudly watching his son and nephew play for Mountain Ash, Billy remained a fierce rugby fan and critic throughout his life, serving as Vice President for the club for many years.

He is survived by his children Michael and Nicola and two grandchildren Victoria and Jonathon, moving to be near his daughter in Mumbles in his later years.

A talented stone mason and builder, Billy is also remembered as a loving husband to his late wife Glenys after their marriage at the age of 21.

Paying tribute to his uncle, nephew and former Mountain Ash RFC player Brian Juliff said: “Billy was very sociable, friendly and outgoing, you knew he was in the room when he was there.

“He was very generous, humble, funny and a family man all his life with his grandchildren. He was devoted to his wife Glenys.”

“Ever since I can remember as a boy we used to go and watch the rugby. He followed them home and away.”

Life-long friend Gary Marsh added: “Billy was a wonderful character and a great friend not just to me but to everyone who knew him.

“We shared a love of sport and particularly rugby. He had a great booming voice, he wasn’t shy and would always let his feelings known.

“He loved his family greatly and was proud of each and every one of them and their achievements.

“He was a very very passionate supporter of not just the Mountain senior [rugby team] and supported the youth team as well as the junior divisions.”

Following Billy’s death on August 23, a statement from Mountain RFC reads: “The club is saddened by the sad passing of life-long supporter, Bill Dowding. Our condolences are with all family members and friends.

“A great family man, and a passionate and loyal supporter of The Old Firm.”
