Mountain roadworks on schedule
THE Maerdy Mountain Road works have continued despite recent bad weather and are on course to be completed this month.
The works are to repair and future proof the road, and it has been fully closed since July.
It follows a landslip caused by prolonged rainfall during December 2015, and Rhondda Cynon Taf council says “significant” works are taking place including road resurfacing, repair and replacement of dry stone retaining walls, as well as drainage improvement.
The scheme also includes a range of improvements to the road’s safety.
The council says it will reopen the road “as soon as possible” and subject to good weather, later this month.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council and cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “The scale and complexity of the repair works required on the Maerdy Mountain Road are huge, but nonetheless good progress continues to be made with the works – despite periods of bad weather in recent weeks.
“The council continues to work closely with its contractor to conclude this challenging project with contractors working extended hours to enable the road to re-open later this month.
“When the road does re-open, road users will be able to see the benefit of further improvement works brought about by additional council investment, and support from the Welsh Government, to future-proof this key route.
“I’d like to thank residents for their continued cooperation while the road remains closed and the works continue to progress.
“The council will communicate arrangements for the road to re-open in due course.”
