A VALLEYS hospital that entertains staff, patients and visitors with musical shows is looking forward to a packed autumn of events that will include the first harvest thanksgiving service since opening five years ago.

The service, one of many to take place at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon between now and Christmas, will include pupils from the Church in Wales School in Aberdare, and take place on October 4 led by the hospital chaplain, Father Robert Davies.

It will come after a performance this week from the Ynysowen Male Choir between 2pm and 3pm.

The choir was formed in the area shortly after the Aberfan Disaster, and its musical director, accomplished harpist Jennifer Jones MBE, will play a medley of tunes during the performance.

With Armistice Day taking place in November, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon will also be holding an Armistice Day Service in the atrium of the hospital on November 9.

This service will be led by another of the hospital’s chaplains, Wendy Evans, and will begin at 10.30pm.

Then, on November 22, Cytgord, the Welsh Ladies’ Choir of Aberdare, will also be performing from 2pm until 3pm.

Next, what has become known as Festive Fortnight will start on December 4.

It will see a Christmas food and craft fayre with 16 stalls on December 5, beginning at 10am.

Full details of these events will be issued at a later date.

Joan Jenkins, from the hospital, said: “The entertainment and events which take place every month are for the benefit and well being of the patients, out-patients, staff and visitors to the hospital and this was at the suggestion of senior hospital manager Keith Powell.

“As this hospital is situated in the Cynon Valley and serves the community, every residential and care home in the Cynon Valley received an invitation to attend all such events and thoroughly enjoy them.”
