Roadworks will see new turning lanes on A4059

SIX-WEEKS of works to one of the main roads running through the Cynon Valley began on Monday that will mean temporary traffic lights in place as new turning lanes are installed.

The works to the A4059 Canal Road in Cwmbach opposite the Gulf Petrol Station, will see two new lanes installed on the carriageway, creating safer holding lanes for cars turning right into the petrol station and local businesses.

According to Rhondda Cynon Taf council, the scheme will take six weeks, and will mean during non-peak times, temporary traffic lights will be used, and manually controlled.

During peak traffic times, the two-way flow of traffic will be maintained.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council and cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said: “Carrying out improvements on the wider A4059 corridor through the Cynon Valley is a priority for this council, which has invested significantly in many schemes over the last 18 months to improve traffic flow, especially at peak times.

“The latest scheme at Cwmbach will create dedicated turn lanes on the highway – which has proved successful in the A4059 works at Asda and Ynys roundabouts, and at Mountain Ash.”

The works follow ground investigations and clearance works which took place on site earlier this year, and the scheme is the latest to take place on the A4059 Cynon Valley corridor.

It follows recentlycompleted works to improve the Canal Road approaches to Cwmbach Roundabout, and install turn lanes.

The project, which is funded by a Welsh Government grant, will widen the carriageway into the existing verge, making room for the new lanes in the centre of the road, and ensure vehicles wanting to turn right will no longer obstruct southbound traffic.

Coun Morgan added: “The works will last around six weeks, and traffic management will only be required outside of peak hours.

“These works have also been scheduled after the Maerdy Mountain Road has reopened, and follows on from the improvements to the nearby Cwmbach Roundabout.

“This latest project, for which the council has secured significant support from the Welsh Government, shows once again that investment in highways is a key priority for the benefit of residents and visitors to Rhondda Cynon Taff.”
