ABERDARE’S SANTA RUN

-

MORE than 100 people braved the rain to take part in an annual Santa Run on Sunday.

The Santa Fun run took place in Dare Valley Country Park, in Aberdare, and was organised by Dragons Running Club.

Families taking part in the 5k fun run or the 2k kids race wore Santa suites for the race in aid of Llwydcoed Baby Memorial Garden (BMG).

These were handed out in the morning to get everyone in the festive spirit.

The BMG group is a voluntary community group made up of bereaved parents of babies no longer with us who have set up a garden in their memory.

Debra Davies, chair woman of the Dragons Running Club said: “Congratulations to everyone that ran the Santa run.

“There were some amazing times for a difficult 5k.

“We run two beginner groups a year which gets people from our local community running and active we call this our C25K programme. It’s a 16-week running programme that gets people to run 5k without stopping.

“Today we had a group of C25k graduating and running their first 5k race. We are all so proud of them.”

The race was due to take place on December 10 but was cancelled due to snow.

Snow blanketed the area when a cold front hit Wales last week, leaving the course under inches of ice and snow.

However, organisers gave the event the go-ahead last weekend and runners turned out in force despite the cold and rain.

The amateur running group holds events throughout the year and welcomes people of all ages and abilities to join its runs every Tuesday and Thursday from Abercwmboi Rugby Club.

They is taking on a new c25k group of beginners in January 2018.
