-

WALES has a new world champion... and she’s from the Valleys!

Amy Williams is celebrating her second World Indoor Bowls Council Ladies’ Under 25 singles championship win, after she also won the title in 2015.

It came after she won her group against competitors from Canada, England, Scotland, and a fellow Welsh bowler after two days of round robin matches at the Newport Indoor Bowls Centre.

It took place on December 5, and she only lost one match on a tie-break on her way to the semi-final stage, where she was joined by Irish bowler Chloe Watson and two English bowlers: sisters Katy and Lucy Smith.

The final took place that morning, and each girl’s four bowls were no more than 10 inches from the jack, called an “incredibly high standard” of bowling by onlookers.

It was Amy, who represents Islwyn Indoor Bowls Club, that took control of the first set winning by eight shots to two after eight of the nine ends.

The second set proved a much closer affair with more “superb bowling” from both girls, but Amy controlled each end, eventually winning the set five shots to four.

A spokesman for Amy said: “This was a very popular win with the home crowd, and was Amy’s second world title after playing at this event for the last six years consecutively.

“In those years she made the semi-finals five times, the final three times, winning two of them.

“This will be Amy’s last title at this event as next year she will be overaged to qualify, so what a way to finish this stage of her bowling career.”
