Special cakes for shop anniversary

-

WHAT’S the perfect sweet treat to celebrate a business milestone for a popular valleys fish and chip shop?

Fish and chip (and mushy peas) cupcakes, of course!

These fantastic cake creations were presented to Mathew Williams owner of The Crispy Cod, who is marking 10 years since opening his first takeaway in Tonyrefail.

The award-winning fish and chip shop - it won Welsh Chip Shop of the Year in 2012 & 2013 - now has a second branch complete with a sit-down restaurant further up the Rhondda Valley in Gelli. The cakes, which were a surprise gift from Mathew’s wife, Anna, to mark the momentous occasion, could be mistaken for buffet portions of The Crispy Cod’s signature dish – but on closer inspection are revealed to be painstakingly created cup cakes.

Not only are the cakes made in a variety of flavours – including chocolate, chocolateorange, lemon and poppy seed and cherry bakewell – but they come with ‘mushy peas,’ ‘curry sauce’ and ‘gravy.’

The latter are made from green butter icing, caramel sauce and chocolate sauce, respectively.

The brains behind the creation is school administrator, Kath Hughes, who is modest about her creative skills.

She said: “I don’t really bake very often, I did make my own wedding cake about 20 years ago though. I’m just too busy and I wouldn’t like to do it all the time.”

Mathew added: “It was a lovely surprise to get the cakes, they taste amazing, each one has a different filling.”

To celebrate its anniversary The Crispy Cod has a number of special deals on.
