FIREARMS incidents, drug warrants and a fatal house fire.

Those are just some of the incidents dealt with by South Wales Police officers and staff in January – a month the force has described as “interesting”.

January also saw new Chief Constable Matt Jukes spend his last shift as deputy and first shift as chief on patrol with officers in the area at the Nos Galan Road Races and over New Year’s Eve evening, and three new PCSOs and more special constables join the team.

According to a force spokeswoman, officers dealt with firearms incidents leading to two offenders being charged and remanded for robbery and possession of an imitation firearm, and two officers having been recommended for a Chief Constable’s Commendation for helping to save the life of a person who overdosed.

That’s not to mention the neighbourhood policing teams engaging with local communities and executing a “number of successful drug warrants” and seizing vehicles driven in an anti-social way.

That’s as well as the house fire in Hirwaun which saw a man sadly die and 10 homes evacuated on January 23.

Rob Blunt, Local Policing Inspector, said: “I have an excellent team who are working tirelessly day in and day out to keep the Cynon Valley safe.

“Although January has been an interesting month this just demonstrates the wide variety of our roles.” POLICE are investigating a robbery in Penywaun in which a suspect threatened a shop assistant before making off with cash.

The incident happened at about 4pm on Friday at Alan’s General Store in Penywaun, Aberdare.

According to South Wales Police, who are appealing for information about the incident, a man entered the shop before threatening the assistant and demanding money from the till.

They said he then “snatched” at the till before making off with “a quantity of cash”, running from the store. The suspect is described by police as a white male, approximately 6ft tall, of slim build, and in his early 20s. He was wearing a limecoloured hooded top with the hood raised and which had stripes along the arms.

Detective Constable Clare Edwards said: “This was a very distressing incident for the shop assistant and we want to hear from anyone who may have information concerning the identity of the suspect.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 and quote reference 1800040706.
