Following some great action it was Kristian Dowd of the Rose & Crown who took the honours and a place in the next round.

THIS was another quality field with several possible candidates for the winner’s spot but when the tungsten settled it was young Marcus Davies of the Grawen Arms who made it through to round two.

VENUE: BAILI-GLAS (BOARD 2, WINDOW SIDE)

KEVIN Hyde of the Ye-Olde Express was involved in a great semi-final here with Kierion Meek of the Lord Raglan just edging the contest to make the board final where he would face a surprise package in the shape of former teammate Ceri Richards with the latter causing a shock with victory and a place in the next round. Venue: Colliers Cwtch This was a long trip for the players so victory was vital in making the trip worthwhile and after a night of superb action it was Richard Calahane of the Red Lion who roared his way to success and a place in the next round.

VENUE: PENTREBACH LABOUR CLUB (BOARD 2. FREESTANDI­NG)

JASON Woodford of the Hills Plymouth Cricket Club beat Chris Stansfield of the Merthyr Conservati­ve Club in an entertaini­ng game and in the final he would face Brian Nicholas of the Ye-Olde Express.

A really tense nip ’n’ tuck final saw Brian take the game 2-1 to move into the next round.

VENUE: GUEST KEEN BOWLS CLUB

RHYS Lee of the Hills Plymouth Cricket Club booked his place in the night’s final with a 2-1 win over Josh O’Keefe of the Pentrebach Labour Club and in the final he would face Michael Bond of the Penydarren Social Club A who accounted for Steve Evans of the Rose & Crown by the same scoreline.

The 2-1 theme continued in the final with Michael Bond scoring a surprise win over the more experience­d Rhys.

VENUE: PENTREBACH LABOUR CLUB

CHRISTOPHE­R Davies, Silver Bullet, took his semi-final with a great 2-1 margin over Glen Jones of the Penydarren Social Club A and in the final he would face the vastly more experience­d Jason Baynham of the Merthyr Labour Club. A great display from Jason, 180, saw him take the game 2-0 and book place in the next round.

VENUE: MERTHYR CONSERVATI­VE CLUB

THIS was a great venue with some great games and high scoring.

Wayne James, 4x100, 2x140, 68 out, of the Imperial Hotel got the tungsten flowing with a 2-1 win over Tracy Goode of the VNU in the first game.

The first semi saw Wayne face Derek Dobbins of the Merthyr Vale Ex Club B and with the help of 4x140 it was Derek who made it into the final.

The final saw Scott Bayliss 2x100, 140 of the Guest Keen Bowls Club A miss out by a 2-1 margin to former multiple champion Jeff Pearce 4x140 of the Baili-Glas B who’s out to regain his Singles crown.

The final was a thrilling affair with both players hitting countless 80+ scores but it was Jeff 2x100, 134, 135, 2x140 who took the game 2-1 over Derek who hit 100, 137, 2x140 to book his place in the second round.

VENUE: DOWLAIS CON CLUB

GREAT darts here and in the first semi-final David Rowlands 2x100, 119, 140 of the Merthyr Labour Club claimed a 2-0 win over Nigel Owen 100, 180 of the Penydarren Social Club A and in the final he would face teammate Wayne Davies 3x100, 123 who beat the battling Jonathon Evans 125 from the Penydarren Social Club A again by a 2-0 margin.

The final saw the same 2-0 margin with former Singles winner Wayne 2x100, 3x140 beating his buddy David 100.

VENUE: GRAWEN ARMS

THE first semi-final saw local hero Kerry Green in great form hitting the board off the wall against the Baili-Glas B’s Mervyn Matthews.

In the final, waiting for the winner, was Mark Virgin of the Ye-Olde Express and in another great game it was Mark who found the winning doubles to take his place in the next round.

VENUE: MERTHYR VALE EX CLUB (BOARD 2, HALL STAGE)

VAST amount of experience on show here but it was the younger generation in the shape of Liam Russell of the Rose & Crown who bloomed to take his place in round two.

THE first semi featured Martin Treen of the Richards Arms against Dean Lewis of the Hills Plymouth Cricket Club with the former winning 2-0.

The second semi featured King Kevin Roberts of the Baili-Glas B against Steve Thomas of the Guest Keen Bowls Club A with Kevin taking the honours 2-1 in a very hard fought game.

In the final Martin took the win 2-0 before their coco could get cold giving him and Kevin time to catch up on the old times.

VENUE: PENYDARREN SOCIAL CLUB (BOARD 2, SIDE DART ROOM)

THE winning candidate here was former champion Ron Morgan, Merthyr Labour Club, who still had the stamina to beat young Dean Thomas of the YeOlde Express 2-0 in a great final.

VENUE: YE-OLDE EXPRESS

HAS to be said, very disappoint­ing turnout here but not for Clive Powell of the VNU who was the ONLY ONE to turn up so had a complete walkover into the next round.

VENUE: WHITE HORSE (BOARD 2, BACK ROOM)

PLENTY here to keep the fans happy with some great action.

The night started with former Grand Finalist Jason Launchbury 100, 2x140 of the Grawen Arms overcoming the challenge of the tigerish Alan Hancox 137 of the Imperial Hotel in a great battle while in the next game veteran John Wood of the Rose & Crown battled past Greg Howells representi­ng the Merthyr Conservati­ve Club.

The first semi-final saw Jason Launchbury beat Gareth Jenkins of the VNU 2-0 and the same score line saw Steve Thomas 3x100, 125 of the Grawen Arms beat John Wood 125.

The final saw Steve Thomas 4x100, 125 continue his charge for the title with a fine 2-0 victory over his teammate Jason.

VENUE: ABERFAN SOCIAL CLUB (BOARD 2, UPSTAIRS BOARD)

THE first semi-final here saw Ian Thomas of the Baili-Glas end the campaign for this season for Barrie Gilby of the Penydarren Social Club A with a 2-0 win and in the final he would face the veteran Eddie Jones of the Pentrebach Labour Club.

The final was a hard fought encounter which saw Eddie victorious with a 2-0 win.

VENUE: ROSE & CROWN

SOME great players and great action here with two former champions in the field.

The first game was a cracker with Johnny Murphy of the Penydarren Social Club C ending the dreams of another singles crown for former champions Jamie Evans of the Guest Keen Bowls Club A with a 2-1 win. The next game saw another former winner Andrew Rough of the Baili-Glas B have a smoother passage to his semi-final with a 2-0 win over another Penydarren C representa­tive Nathan Morgan.

The first semi saw Johnny’s bubble burst as Dale Pinch from the Guest Keen Bowls Club A beat him 2-1 in a hard battle while in the second semi Andrew continued his quest for another title with a 2-0 win over Baili A stablemate Tim Charleston who missed several attempts at a winning double in the second leg.

The final was a great game which saw Andrew victorious in the winning leg hitting 122, 140, 95, 120, 24 out for a 14-dart leg and a place in the next round.

VENUE: HILLS PLYMOUTH CRICKET CLUB (BOARD 2. HALL STAGE / FREESTANDI­NG)

LOCAL hero Craig Clayton booked his spot in the night’s final with a 2-0 win over Gavin Galleozzie of the Penydarren Social Club C and in the final he would face another Galleozzie in the form of Chris Galleozzie, a totally different pot of lobsters, from the Merthyr Labour Club who beat another HPCC player in his semi, Aled Walters also by a 2-0 margin.

Chris is highly fancied to lift this year’s crown and he remained on course for a shot at the title with a 2-0 win over Craig in a well contested final.

VENUE: HEOLGERRIG SOCIAL CLUB (MAIN BOARD BAR)

NOT many people would have predicted the winner here with a dark horse emerging from the pack.

The first semi saw Connor John from the Penydarren Social Club C beat Hywel Llewellyn, BailiGlas A 2-1 in a cracking match while the second featured venue favourite and former champion Kevin Forbes of the Merthyr Labour Club who beat Andrew Coombes of the Guest Keen Bowls Club A by a 2-0 margin.

The final produced one of the shocks of the night with young Connor upsetting the odds with a magnificen­t 2-1 win over the former champion.

VENUE: ABERFAN SOCIAL CLUB (MAIN BOARD DOWNSTAIRS)

DEFENDING champion Anthony Carstairs of the Merthyr Labour Club got the defence of his title under way with a 2-0 win over Terry Morgan of the Baili-Glas A in his semi, but like so many before him Anthony found it more difficult to retain his title than win it for the first time when he was beaten in the final by Steve “Super Cool” Haman of the Baili-Glas B by a 2-0 margin.

VENUE: BAILI-GLAS (MAIN BOARD)

WINNER here following a night of splendid action was Phil Locke of the Grawen Arms who claims a place in the next round.

VENUE: RICHARDS ARMS

THIS was a tremendous venue where the treble twenty segment and the calculator took a battering with some tremendous play.

The first game saw Adam Evans 2x100, 134, 137 of the Hills Plymouth Cricket Club edge past Kevin Mahoney 100, 140 by a 2-1 score line to take his place in the night’s semis.

The first semi-final saw the veteran Lyndon Price 2x100, 125, 140 from the Guest Keen Bowls Club A beat Owain Davies 121, 135 by a 2-0 margin and in the final he would face former champion Geraint Thomas 2x100, 121, 135, 140, 180 of the Baili-Glas B who beat Adam Evans 4x100, 121 including a 17dart by a 2-1 margin.

The final was another high scoring game with Lyndon notching 3x100, 122, 4x140 but it was Geraint 4x100, 2x140 who took the game 2-1 to continue his quest for another singles crown.

ANDREW Morgan of the Baili-Glas A booked his place in the next round.

VENUE: MERTHYR LABOUR CLUB

WINNER here was Darren Locke of Ye-Olde Express who beat Dai Phelps of the Merthyr Vale Ex Club B by a 2-1 margin and in the final he scored a more comfortabl­e 2-0 win over Colin Lloyd from the Merthyr Conservati­ve Club.

VENUE: LORD RAGLAN

GREAT games here with Rhys Donovan of the Rose & Crown battling past Paul Scott-Thomas of the Red Lion by a 2-1 margin and in the other semi local hero Dai Davenport saw his challenge for this season ended 2-0 by Anthony Prosser of the Imperial Hotel.

A hard fought final then saw Rhys through to the next round with a 2-0 win over Anthony.

VENUE: IMPERIAL HOTEL

DEAN Jenkins 100 of the Silver Bullet and Karl Manns 2x121, 180, Merthyr Vale Ex Club B did battle in the first semi with Karl winning trough 2-1.

The second semi saw a fantastic game with Jonathon Davies 6x100 of the Merthyr Conservati­ve Club edging past Brian Meek 2x100, 3x140, Lord Raglan by a 2-1 margin to book his place in the night’s final.

The final saw Jonathon 2x100 win through against Karl 2x100 by a 2-0 margin to take his place in the next round.

Two more winners of note are Viv Morgan and Brian Roberts both of the Baili-Glas A who qualified at the Hills Plymouth Cricket Club (Main Board) and Silver Bullet respective­ly.
