Amanda has a paw-fect idea after redundancy

A WOMAN left “petrified” after being made redundant has launched a new dog grooming parlour in her own back garden.

When mum Amanda Davies was forced to leave her job of more then 20 years in Merthyr Tydfil she had no idea what the future might hold.

Now, after receiving help and guidance from an old job manager, the mother-of-two has come full circle to become her own boss.

Amanda, 46, said: “When I was made redundant I had been doing the same job for 21 years so to be told I was losing my job – at first I was petrified.

“I absolutely love animals but at first it was a pipe dream until I starting looking at it.”

With funding from Pen y Cymoedd Wind Energy Project and Re-Act Amanda was able to pick up qualifications through an intensive course in dog grooming.

From there, thanks to a business plan created together with her mother and former boss, she launched Scoobs Dog Grooming & Boarding – named after her miniature Schnauzer who died last year.

Amanda, from Hirwaun, said: “It’s in my back yard. My children are loving it, I think they feel quite proud

“I called the business Scoobs after my miniature schnauzer who died last year.

“He was a lovely, loyal pet and I think naming the business after him is a wonderful tribute to him and his memory.

“I am really excited and already have had so much interest shown that I know I have made the right decision.”

As well as dog grooming Amanda will also offer a dog boarding and dog walking service and a pick up and drop-off service for people’s pets.

Amanda’s long term goal, once the business has been established, is to employ someone else.

She said: “I know how it feels to be out of work and if I can help one other person I will be more than happy.”
