Look out for special coins in your change

IF YOU find an odd-looking coin in your loose change, don’t dismiss it or assume it’s a fake – it could be a collector’s item.

The Royal Mint has released a collection of commemorative 10p coins to celebrate all things British.

Mapping out the A-Z of what makes Britain great, the 26 coins include images from the Angel of the North to a zebra crossing.

“These designs were selected because we feel they represent a diverse mix of elements that make up the country we all love,” said Anne Jessopp, CEO at The Royal Mint.

“There is a lot to be proud of in the UK – whether it’s our Houses of Parliament representing democracy and freedom of speech, technological advancements such as Tim BernersLee’s World Wide Web, or just a good cup of tea, it’s all here.”

The entire collection has been rolling out into circulation – Zebra Crossing across the country and will be available at selected post offices.

On Friday the latest in the collection, a limited edition 10p coin dedicated to fish and chips, was released.

The Royal Mint circulated a limited number of the new coins to a number of chip shops around the UK to mark National Fish and Chips Day.

A collectors’ folder, and silver proof and uncirculated versions of the entire collection of 10p coins are available to purchase from The Royal Mint website.

There’s also a Great British Coin Hunt app, allowing coin hunters to create a digital collection of the coins they find in their change.

Users can download the app for free from the App Store or Google Play, to scan the coin with their camera, unlocking exclusive content and placing their coin into a digital folder. They can also link the app to their social media to share the treasures they find in their pockets and wallets.

A heat-map within the app shows where different coins are being found around the country and users can even use the app to have a go at designing their own coin.
