Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will be marking armed Forces day at Ynysangharad War Memorial Park in Pontypridd on Saturday, July 7.

The official raising of the flag service will be followed by a family fun day. The commemorations begin at noon and continue until 4pm.

armed Forces day 2018 will commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War as well as marking the dedication and bravery of our armed forces, past and present.

With many attractions for all ages, this year’s armed Forces day event will also feature a range of stalls providing advice and guidance on the support available for current and former service personnel.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council was one of the first local authorities in Wales to sign up to the armed Forces Covenant in 2012.

Earlier this month, the authority granted the Freedom of the County Borough to Mod St athan, and all local service personnel of the Royal air Force, past and present.

It also placed on record its “respect and admiration” for the courage, devotion to duty and achievements of the Royal air Force during its centenary year.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council deputy leader and armed forces champion Councillor Maureen Webber said: “our armed Forces day 2018 event will once again give the people of Rhondda Cynon Taff the opportunity to thank our armed forces community for all their endeavours.

“This county borough is proud of its strong ties with the armed forces and events such as this cement our relationship even further.

“our annual commemoration to mark armed Forces day is always an important event and one which is always well-supported by the citizens of Rhondda Cynon Taff.

“It is even more poignant this year as we commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

“It is important that we never forget the courage and bravery of all our armed forces personnel, past and present, at home and overseas, which is why a family fun day is taking place on the same day, offering something for people of all ages.”

In recent years, as part of the council’s First World War centenary commemorations, the armed Forces day event has been taken around the county borough in recognition of the links different communities had with the First World War.

Previously, events have been held in Tonyrefail, Ferndale, aberdare, and this year in Pontypridd.
