Litter revealed as reservoir’s water level drops

NEW pictures show how low water levels are at a reservoir near Aberdare.

Nant Hir Reservoir, located just off the Heads of the Valleys Road between Hirwaun and Merthyr, dates back to 1875.

Water levels at the reservoir are reported to reach a maximum depth of around 100ft.

It was also once popular with fishermen and local angling societies.

But the reservoir seems to be shrinking quite considerably, with water levels falling so low that mud and rubbish at the bottom are now being exposed.

The low water levels has even unearthed items which might have not seen the light of day for decades, including old cans of Pepsi and Strongbow.

Images of the reservoir were captured by Mark Jenkins, who posted them to the Merthyr Tydfil - The Past Facebook group.

Mr Jenkins - who took the photographs at about 5.30pm on Wednesday, July4 - said he’d never seen the reservoir so empty.

“I don’t think it’s right being that low as I know there are fish in this reservoir,” he said.

“I wouldn’t want to see it going any lower than that really. But, now is probably an ideal time to clean up all the rubbish in there.”

A Welsh Water spokesman said: “We have been carrying out routine maintenance work at Nant-Hir reservoir – and in order to carry that out safely we have drawn down the level of the reservoir. The work is unrelated to the dry weather we have been experiencing.”
