A NURSERY nurse who has looked after two generations of youngsters is retiring after spending 40 “marvellous and happy” years in the job.

Amanda Davey spent her last day at Cilfynydd Primary School in Pontypridd last week.

The 60-year-old from Aberdare was treated to a special assembly by pupils at the school and enjoyed an afternoon tea at Miskin Manor for her birthday earlier last week.

Mrs Davey said she is looking forward to spending the first part of her retirement sorting out her garage and attic before going on a long-awaited holiday.

She got her first job in the nursery at Cwmbach Church School at the age of 19 after studying at Barry College.

“I was there for 26 years and then I came to Cilfynydd Primary 15 years ago and it has been the happiest of times,” she said. “I have had wonderful work colleagues who are my friends and they have just been great.”

She added: “My job has been a way of life for me and I have absolutely loved it.”

Last Thursday, an assembly was held in Mrs Davey’s honour, with children from every class performing poems and songs.

Mrs Davey said she has always enjoyed working with nursery-age children because “they are joyful”.

“I love three-year-old children,” she said.

“It’s their first placement in a school setting and the mothers have to leave them at the door.

“The relationship you build with them and the parents of nursery children is just wonderful.

“They are just playful, every day is different with nursery children and every day is an adventure full of fun and laughter.”

Mrs Davey said she is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and two children.

Hayley Keep, a parent at the school, said: “Mrs Davey will be greatly missed here at Cilfynydd Primary.

“The parents would like to thank her for everything she has done for our children over the past 15 years.

“She is truly one in a million.”

“I have had wonderful work colleagues who are my friends and they have just been great.” Retiring nursery nurse Amanda Davey
