SW ASSOCIATION

-

THE majority of the South Wales Cricket Association was washed out but the weather didn’t rain on Llangennech’s parade as they were crowned Division Two champions.

The side’s six-wicket victory over Morriston nine days ago ensured they would be playing Division One cricket next season and the heavy rain on Saturday helped them clinch the title with one game to spare.

Llangennech captain Matthew Jones felt they were deserving champions and is already relishing playing in a higher league next season.

“We’ve been in Division One before and came straight back down,” he said.

“I think it’ll be a challenge for us. The bottom five in that league are probably on par with the top five teams in Division Two so we can cope pretty well I think.

“We’ve got good players and I think there are no complaints about us being champions. It’s been a good all-round effort this season.”

Dai Williams and James Taube have both been in irresistible form with 347 and 332 runs respectively this season.

They will be aiming to reach the 400-mark this weekend at Baglan while Scott Lloyd and Hedd-Wyn Jones have both scored 300.

Llangennech also boast the league’s top wicket-taker with Simon Clement on 31, including three five-fors – another league high.

The rain also proved useful for Division One leaders Gorseinon as they managed to keep hold of their six-point lead at the top.

They were due to face nearest challengers Cowbridge in a topof-the-table clash but it will now go down to the final two weeks of the season.

Gorseinon host basement boys Swansea Civil Service next week before they travel to Llandysul while Cowbridge face struggling Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare.

In Division Three, Pontyberem got their game at Porthcawl underway but were forced to abandon the match after reaching 100-2 in 16 overs.

One game that did manage to go ahead and reach its conclusion was in Division Six where Llandysul II thrashed Kidwelly Town II by nine wickets.

Kidwelly II were all out after a measly 19 with Owen Bailey topscoring with a paltry nine. Osian Thomas helped himself to four wickets while Dafydd Hatley and Aled Jones both bagged two
