THERE’s not much that’s more romantic than the stunning sound of a Welsh choir.

so who better to provide the soundtrack to one of the most romantic moments of your life - the day you pop the question to your childhood sweetheart?

Well, that’s exactly what happened when 26-yearold aircraft engineer Aled Hughes asked Rachel Murphy to be his wife.

surrounded by rose petals and close family and friends, Aled, from Abercynon, got down on one knee as Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir belted out a stunning rendition of Ed sheeran’s song, Tenerife sea.

And if that wasn’t romantic enough, he even used cue cards inspired by the famous scene from Love Actually.

The idea was sparked after Aled and his uncle, Mike Thomas, shared a few beers on holiday in Tenerife last year.

Aled mentioned that he was planning to propose to Rachel and asked his uncle – who is the conductor of the choir – to help him out.

The pair came up with an elaborate plan, which included drafting in the choir as well as a local soloist to perform during the proposal.

“Aled asked if the choir could learn the song Tenerife sea by Ed sheeran, because that’s ‘their song’,” Aled’s auntie and Mike’s wife, Margaret Thomas, said. “Mike told him ‘we can sing it, but we need a couple of months to learn it’.”

Finally the big day came, and on saturday, August 11 – a day before the couple were due to go away on their holidays – Aled popped the question.

“It was absolutely wonderful and so emotional,” Margaret said.

“He took Rachel out for some dinner and we were all waiting in the house for when they returned.

“The proposal was meant to take place in the garden but because of the rain, the choir had to wait upstairs in the bungalow.”

Margaret added: “Aled was so well organised. He’d thought of everything.

“He’s even left us all video messages telling us exactly where to hide and what to do. He’d strewn rose petals on the stairs, and as he led Rachel up the choir started singing.

“He then used Love Actually-inspired cue cards to pop the question. They were all very personal and emotional. We were all crying.”

And, thankfully Rachel said yes!
