What RCT council will charge for use of track

THE amount that Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will charge for the use of a new athletics track in Aberdare has been revealed.

The new prices for the track at Aberdare Athletics Stadium came into force on Monday, September 3.

Work began on the £3m facility at the end of 2017 after the demolition of the former Michael Sobell Sports Centre.

The athletics stadium has a new track, field athletics facilities and football pitch for cup competitions and schools finals, as well as a 263-seat stand, changing rooms and a studio/meeting room.

It is part of a £67m project involving Aberdare Community School, Sobell Leisure Centre, a 3G pitch and a skate park, while the council says the charges for the track will ensure it is affordable to local sports clubs and organisations.

The new charges for the track and field are as follows:

£50 per hour for adults with the use of lights;

£37.50 per hour for adults without the use of lights;

£25 per hour for juniors with the use of lights;

£18.75 per hour for juniors without the use of lights;

£3.45 for individual access;

£2.05 for junior individual access (price provided on application for special events). facilities adult £100 match; £50 for a junior match; £12.50 per hour for additional floodlights; for an adult

It will be £22.35 per hour for the use of the studio/meeting room, £18 per hour for additional staffing as required and prices will be provided on application for commercial bookings.

A council report says the charges “continue the council’s commitment to community sport by providing top-quality sports facilities that are affordable to residents and local organisations.”

It also says that the athletics club and local schools have had a “difficult period” with the loss of the athletics stadium previously, as they’ve had to find other venues in the meantime.

The council added that the charges are aligned with current leisure charges and future plans for 3G pitches.

It says there has been “significant interest” from the public, sports clubs and schools, so it expects a high level of usage, but that it is difficult to accurately estimate what that will be at the moment.
