Extra £1m for roads and pavements
AN EXTRA £1m worth of road and pavement improvements are planned in the borough this year.
The council will spend £883,000 on an extra 25 carriageway improvement projects and £413,000 on an extra 12 footway schemes, a total extra expenditure to almost £1.3m.
This is in addition to its previously approved capital programme for 2019-20 which includes £6.3m for carriageways and £1.5m for pavements across RCT.
Speaking at the cabinet meeting which approved the extra schemes on Tuesday, June 18, council leader Andrew Morgan said it was part of a £23.5m three-year investment programme in roads and pavements.
He said the council’s capital budget in previous years had been about £1m, but with the additional schemes and those already approved, it is now £8m.
These are the extra carriageway schemes approved by the council:
£25,000 – composite on Heol y Mynydd, Aberdare
£55,000 – overlay on access to Ferndale High School, Ferndale
£60,000 – strengthening Aberdare Road, Blaenllechau
£65,000 – strengthening Berw Road, Tonypandy
£55,000 – strengthening Victoria Street, Penrhiwceiber
£26,000 – strengthening Bradley Street, Abercynon
£28,000 – strengthening Hamilton Street, Mountain Ash
£25,000 – composite on Blaengwawr Close, Aberaman
£40,000 – microasphalt on Danygraig Crescent and Danygraig Drive, Talbot Green
£30,000 – strengthening Pleasant Street, Pentre
£45,000 – strengthening Llanharry Road, Brynsadler
£55,000 – microasphalt on Penrhiwceiber Road, Penrhiwceiber
£30,000 – microasphalt on Pant-y-cerdin, Cwmbach
£60,000 – strengthening Upper and Lower Terrace, Stanleytown
£34,000 – composite on Brookfield Lane, Pontypridd

And there are 12 extra footway schemes, including a £110,000 tarmac of Coed Isaf Road in Pontypridd.
Other tarmac works include £80,000 for Yorkdale Estate in Beddau, £30,000 for Danygraig Crescent and Drive in Talbot Green, £30,000 for Bryncoch in Taffs Well, £30,000 for Milbourne Street in Penygraig, £28,000 for Tegfan in Ferndale, £15,000 for Coedpenmaen Road in Pontypridd and £15,000 for Hillcrest Drive in Porth.
There are access improvements planned, including £20,000 for Meadow Street and Park Street in Trefforest, £20,000 for Station Road in Hirwaun and £15,000 for Gelli Terrace in Gelli.
The final footway project is £20,000 for slabs on Collwyn Street in Coedely.
