Upside-down house like a show home

- JOANNE RIDOUT joanne.ridout@walesonline.co.uk

WHEN your house has been built to take advantage of mountainside views across the rooftops of your neighbours, why would you give the bedrooms the best views?

After all, most of the time you spend in these rooms are with your eyes closed, so you can’t see the views anyway.

The design of an ‘upsidedown’ house is becoming more and more popular with homeowners as absorbing views become one of the top ‘must have’ aspects buyers are looking for in a new home.

This four-bedroom contemporary abode in Llwydcoed, near Aberdare, was built three years ago with its location very much informing the eventual design.

Whether spectacular sunset views across the expansive sky or views of snowy mountain and rooftops that mesmerise, this home has access to all the wonders of nature from the comfort of the first floor rooms.

The detached home has all the reception space on the first floor, including arguably the standout room in the home – the open-plan kitchen, diner and lounge at the rear.

This spacious room is the sociable heart of the home for the current owners, with the breakfast bar on the large granite topped kitchen island probably the most popular place to hang out and chat.

For a more formal dining option, the space flows into a dedicated eating zone with easily enough room for a dining suite to seat up to six people.

The room may be openplan and modern in design but that doesn’t mean it is cold and clinical.

The most obvious warming element to the space is the feature log burner in the area between the dining and lounge space.

The clever trick of using a panel of exposed stone behind the burner not only gives the feature prominence within the room but also adds character and visual warmth.

The lounge area has a floor to ceiling Juliet balcony with glass balustrade which means all the light and the views can flow into the space, whether the doors are open or not.

Maybe a new owner would like to add a first floor balcony to the space to create an elevated terrace where the views can be enjoyed when the weather is dry.

For any family members wanting a more quiet and separate space, the home has a secondary reception room at the front of the property ideally used as a snug or study.

The first floor also has a cloakroom and, because this home is situated lower than street level, an internal garage too.

If a place to sleep for the car is not a priority for a new owner, this versatile space could be transformed into another reception room, a fifth bedroom, or integrated into the open-plan living space.

Downstairs to bed, and there are four double bedrooms to discover.

The most generous bedroom is the master that runs the length of the property, with French doors leading out onto the garden patio at one end and an ensuite shower room at the other.

The second bedroom also has an ensuite shower room and this level also boasts a four piece family bathroom, all decorated with a contemporary predominantly white and grey interior scheme creating luxury spaces to either relax in the bath or wake up in the shower.

The other two bedrooms can be found at the rear of the house.

Also on this ground floor is a handy utility room that opens out onto the garden patio and lawn.
