Daffodil fest returning
SPRING will be in the air in Aberdare later this month as the Festival of Daffodils returns for its 16th year.
The festival has a full programme of events with guests and speakers.
SPRING will be in the air in Aberdare later this month as the Festival of Daffodils returns for its 16th year.
Organised by the Soroptimist Club of Aberdare, events are held at Green Street Chapel, which will be decked out in thousands of blooms for the occasion.
The festival is always organised to coincide with St David’s Day to show off the national flower of Wales.
Starting on Thursday, February 27 and lasting for four days, the festival has a full programme of events with guests and speakers.
Day one starts with the sell-out Festival Tea where poet comedian Lorna Pearson will entertain.
On Friday, February 28, at 10.30am, popular radio and television presenter Roy Noble will deliver his talk Down the Road and Round the Bend – Tales of Wales, Fact and Fiction and Fanciful.
After refreshments, including homemade cakes and bara brith, Royal
Welsh College of Music and Drama students supported by Fay Jones (clarinet) Grace Jones (flute) and Georgia Furlong (soloist) will entertain visitors from 2.30pm.
On the Saturday at 10.30am, there will be a bilingual celebration of St David’s Day.
After a few short readings, there will entertainment from the Dare to Sing local ladies’ choir, Merched Pennar, Catrin Southall (soprano), Debra Williams (flute), and storyteller Debra John.
At 6pm on St David’s Day, a songs of praise service will take place including The Mountain Ash and District Choral Society.
Entry to all of these events is free and there will be a chance to buy cards in memory of lost loved ones for £2 each.
Each card has space for a message and purchases a container of daffodils on display in the church.
Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation for women and all monies made by the Aberdare Soroptimist Club will be donated to local charities, including cancer care and support, the Cynon Valley homeless and Wales Air Ambulance.
During the festival, light refreshments will be sold in the schoolroom adjoining the chapel.
A warm welcome will be extended to all.
