Whisky distillery celebrates haul of World Spirits medals
A CYNON Valley distillery is celebrating a medal haul for its whiskies.
Penderyn Distillery, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, landed a double gold and two gold medals at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020 was claimed by Penderyn’s Peated 46% Single Malt Whisky, which boasts an aromatic, smoky flavour, with citrus and vanilla notes for the discerning whisky drinker.
Its Portwood 46%, which has hints of berry and dark chocolate, claimed a gold medal alongside the Rich Oak 46%, which has distinct tones of cinnamon and fudge with a hint of guava and mango to finish.
The San Francisco World Spirits Competition, held annually, is one of the most prestigious events on the international distilling calendar.
Sam Filmus, president of ImpEx Beverages, which oversaw the competition, said: “It’s great to see that each of these has achieved gold or double gold status.
“Three expressions – Peated, Portwood and Rich Oak – were tasted by the entire ImpEx team while visiting the Penderyn distillery.”
The competition invites the opinions of worldrenowned judges and smaller distilleries such as Penderyn have continued to emerge as trailblazers in recent years as tastes continue to move towards more innovative whiskies.
Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Distillery, said: “We are very proud of this significant Gold medal haul.
“This award win not only underlines the consistency of Penderyn Distillery
but that our whisky is at the top of its game internationally.
“We feel this underlines our world-class quality on the global stage, particularly to the US market, where Penderyn is making its presence increasingly known.”
Earlier this year, this company submitted plans for a £5m distillery and and visitor centre in Llandudno.
The brand has secured a £1.4m Welsh Government cash offer for its first expansion into North Wales.
Bosses at the business, which is based in the village of Penderyn, hope to secure planning permission to convert the current Conwy Archives site at Old Board School on Lloyd Street into a distillery for their world renowned spirits. They have submitted plans to Conwy council and hope to open the new site by 2021 if they are approved.
Penderyn is also looking to open a distillery and visitor centre in Swansea. Listed building consent and planning permission was granted in February last year for a development at the city’s historic Hafod Morfa Copperworks site.
It means the disused site will be transformed into a distillery, offices and a VIP bar in the fully refurbished powerhouse building, whilst a newbuild visitor centre with shop, tasting bar, exhibition space and toilets will also be created. It is hoped that the attraction will open in 2022.
