Teenager’s lucky escape from blaze

POLICE officers have rescued a teenager from a car before it burst into flames after a latenight chase on a Valleys road.

The incident happened near Mountain Ash in the Cynon Valley shortly before 10pm on Saturday.

According to South Wales Police, the vehicle involved – a blue Ford Fiesta – was showing as having no insurance and failed to stop when it was pursued by officers.

The pursuit took place over a number of miles before the car crashed off the road.

Police officers then acted quickly and rescued a 19-year-old man, who was later taken to hospital with “multiple injuries”, from the vehicle before it caught fire.

An image captured from the scene shows fire coming from a ditch where the car came to a stop, with smoke billowing into the air as police closed off the road.

A spokeswoma­n for South Wales Police said: “A car showing as having no insurance failed to stop for roads policing officers on Monk Street, Aberdare, just before 10pm.

“The blue Ford Fiesta was pursued over Maerdy Mountain Road and on to Llanwonno Road, where it crashed.

“Police officers rescued one person from the car before it caught on fire. No other vehicles were involved.

“A 19-year-old man was taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital with multiple injuries. Inquiries are continuing.”

A National Police Air

Service helicopter also attended the incident, along with a fire crew from Tonypandy who used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

South Wales Police confirmed that the injured man has also been arrested.
