THE famous New Year’s Eeve Nos Galan race could be cancelled this year because of Covid-19.

Founded in 1958 by local runner Bernard Baldwin, it celebrates Guto Nyth Brân’s first competitive race.

THE famous Nos Galan races in Mountain Ash are likely to be cancelled this year because of coronavirus.

Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf council Councillor Andrew Morgan and Councillor Ann Crimmings, the chair of the Nos Galan Committee, say there is a “high probability” that the event will not go ahead because of the pandemic.

A final decision will be made by the middle of September and although the event is still five months away, planning would normally be in its final stages at this time of the year. The famous road races take place on New Year’s Eve in Mountain Ash each year and celebrates the life and achievements of Welsh runner Guto Nyth Bran.

Founded in 1958 by local runner Bernard Baldwin, the races are run over the 5km around the town centre and include races for children aged eight and over, an elite runners race, the main adult fun run and presentations as well as a celebrity mystery runner.

In a statement, they said: “We have received a number of requests seeking clarification if the Nos Galan Races will go ahead this New Year’s Eve due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Whilst we are still five months away from New Year’s Eve, planning for the Nos Galan Races would normally be in its final stages at this time, with registration opening in early September, just five weeks away

“The Nos Galan Organising Committee will be meeting remotely in the next few weeks to review the latest position and it’s likely that a final decision if the event will take place or be cancelled, will be made by mid-September based on the public health advice we receive.

“However we must make clear the health and well-being of residents and visitors has to be the priority and there is a high probability the event will not go ahead this year.

“We appreciate, just like the committee, many will be disappointed if the event is cancelled, but we have to ensure any final decision is in the best interests to protect the health of residents and visitors.”
