THE famous Nos Galan road races in Mountain Ash will not take place this year due to the coronavirus.
The races, which usually take place in the Cynon Valley town every New Year’s Eve will not happen in their usual form in 2020, the organisers have announced.
The organising committee met online last week to receive public health information about the virus and are now proposing a virtual event.
Gatherings of more than 30 are still not allowed, and due to a small increase in the virus with a number of clusters having been identified recently, the committee says it’s unlikely any further relaxing of measures will happen soon and so it has cancelled the event this year.
In a statement the committee said: “Normally by early September we open registration for the races and the organisation of the event is largely complete.
“With the uncertainty on what rules could be in place in December we have taken the unprecedented decision to cancel the event for 2020.
“With over 10,000 spectators and almost 2,000 runners, social distancing would be impossible and, as a committee, we have to be mindful that bringing people together from across the South Wales area and much further afield, even if the rules did allow, could cause a significant spike in Covid cases.
“While this is a decision we would hope to never have to make, after working so hard to rebuild the event over the last 15 years, cancelling the event on the 31st is, without doubt, the right thing to do.
“For that reason we are moving to a virtual event for 2020 where people can register and run on their own or socially distanced with a small group of friends, upload the info and evidence and still get a medal and T-shirt.
“More details on will be released in coming days.” this the
