Statistics show virus infection rate still dropping

ALL local authority areas in Wales have had fewer than 50 cases for every 100,000 people in the last week.

A further two people have died with Covid in Wales and another 126 positive cases have been identified.

Yesterday’s figures published by Public Health Wales show the total number of cases diagnosed in Wales since the outbreak began to 209,942. The total number of people to have died in Wales within a month of testing positive for the virus has risen to 5,521.

According to Public Health Wales, the reported number of cases includes the 48 hour period up to 9am on Easter Monday, which explains why the case numbers are higher than anticipate­d.

The infection rate across Wales has dropped once again and is now 24.8 per 100,000 people, based on the seven days up to April 1 a drop from 28.1 on Monday.

Monday was the first time it has been below 30 cases for every 100k people in the last week since September 9 last year. All of Wales’ local authoritie­s are now reporting less than 50 cases per 100,000 people for the seven days up to April 1. Meanwhile the percentage of tests coming back with positive results is now 2.3%, way below the key benchmark of 5%.

Cardiff was the area with the most reported new cases on Tuesday with 30, followed by Swansea with 21 and Rhondda Cynon Taf with 10.

Wrexham reported nine new cases, Neath Port Talbot and Newport both reported seven new cases. Vale of Glamorgan and Pembrokesh­ire each reported four new cases and Torfaen reported five new cases.

Blaenau Gwent, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Bridgend, and Carmarthen­shire each reported three new cases. Anglesey, Conwy, Denbigshir­e, and Merthyr Tydfil each reported two new cases. Caerphilly, Ceredigion and Powys each reported one new cases. Monmoutshi­re reported no new cases.
